As with any domain it depends on the market.
Remember spanish in the spanish language is actually ESpanol, so it could easily represent the spanish speaking world.
Also keep in mind there are more spanish speakers in the world than English speakers!
Funnily enough I have also noticed the .US is attracting many spanish domain registrations....
