Speculators are making millions of dirhams buying premium UAE domain names and reselling them for a huge profit, local daily the National reported on Monday.

The market in .ae domain names has reached such a level that the country’s telecoms regulator has launched an investigation into the trade, according to the newspaper.

One businessman said he has been offered 4 million dirhams ($1.1 million) each for the vip.ae and vips.ae domain names, while Indian-based technology firm Ozone Group recently sold the horse.ae domain name for 6 million dirhams, the National said.

The Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA), which oversees the .ae domain, said it will take action against anyone found registering domain names with the sole intention to sell them on for a profit.

Registrants found “cybersquatting” on a domain name can be accused of registering the site in bad faith, which is not allowed under TRA rules.

wondering if this isn't a marketing stunt to push domain registrations. I have my doubts that horse.ae would be sold for that much. The domain still says "for sale"

Well, there are several people on UAE who own ridiculously large amount of money and wouldn't mind throwing some away. But you might be right, I have my doubts as well. Isn't the buyer known?
