Default A few questions

Registration companies

Local Brazilians: What companies do you use to register your br domains (other than registro.br)? Do these companies allow you to pay via credit card or paypal?

New domains

How long does it take to process a new domain registration? I've read that br domain registrations do not occur in real time.

Transfers

With regards to buying and selling on the aftermarket, is transfering a domain from one owner to another a simple process or is there paperwork involved?

Cheers

1 - In Brazil we have only registro.br that was created by government for selling and controling .com.br ccTLD and a few other *.br

2 - Yes, new registrations occur in real time.

3 - There's is paperwork involved, what's not pratical but on the other hand make everything very reliable and safe. Safer than .com I would say.

Is it possible to pay for new domain registrations via credit card/paypal or is a local Brazilian bank account needed?

ah for those who live outside Brazil and don't speak Portuguese this is an inconvenience.

I read some of the faqs on the registro.br website and noticed someone had asked why registro.br is so beaureaucratic - Lol!

No paypal, credit card or bank deposit. But you can pay your domain and renew using internet banking, they issue a code for each domain, you can use this code to pay for the domain from any bank or internet banking inside Brazil.

GV: Unfortunately NO!

Sounds really strange! How did they manage to register and maintain over 1.5 million domain names!!??

Are there any plans to change the model to Registry - Registrar as it is common at most of the markets?

It will change for sure as soon as registries will discover that they can have less work and more money in registry - registrar model.. it's a matter of time IMHO.

It's possible. But there are political issues in some cases. The Goverment control the ccTLD.

And in some cases registration is automated without documents.

Some are run by universities, Dominican Rep, Colombia or Guatemala for example. I don't know if they work altruistically.

Each case is different.

"University" model is quite popular. We had similar situation in Poland. Now the model for .pl is registry - registrar and it works much better than the previous situation where there was only NASK (.pl registry), where you could buy .pl domain name. Now it's also much cheaper than it was.

I hope and strongly believe than in the future most of the registries will copy such business model.

Hummm... they receive around 20 million dollars each year renewal fee from domain owers... this way is easy to keep 1.5 million domains. I guess they have a huge crew.

I don't think they have any plans to change the way they manage.

Paying domains sucks as we can't use credit card... some days I have to pay 200 domains or more and I have to do this one domain after another, 1..2..3...4...5... hard work keeping a big portofolio. The good side of this is that it is really safe, no one will ever steal your domain.

I also hope they change, if they do I would like to found my own in Brazil.

I guess they see this as being government responsability to control domain names, not as a new way of making money.... I also don't think they need to spend 20 Million dollars / year to control domains names here... this is too much money for not so much work... remember that here in Brazil salary of a worker is very cheap. Not as cheap as in India and China, but cheap anyway.

That is a lot of money.

In Argentina, the domains are free. Nic.ar manages 1.8 domains with a staff of ten people. They don't use registry - registrar model, the ministery pays the expenses.

I don't know how much is the budget of nic.ar. I doubt that it is 20 million dollars. So Registro.br are gaining a lot of money.

Yes they do make a lot of money... imagine this amount last 15 years... that would be 300 million dollars... now they charge 30 Reais per domain name, some years ago it used to be almost 100 Reais per domain name.

Don't ask me what they do with all this money... I don't know and I doubt someone but them does know!

so why doesn't the registry at least wildcard the domain space and monetize on the remaining traffic ?

Sorry, seems I am new to this term. What would be wildcard? What remaining traffic do you talk about?

all domains which are not registered would go to a parked page, like it is done with .cm and .ph for example. This would generate some revenue for the registry.

Gustavo, type in any .ph domain into your url and it'll produce a page parked by domains.ph. Snicksnack is saying that registro.br could do this with com.br to increase their revenue further.
