I tried to register a .com.br I thought was available through eurodns, they came back saying the registry had denied the request due to the name being unavailable for registration, however the domain is not owned according to any whois. It would make sense that this domain would be registered - it gets around 1 million exact searches a month in Brazil. So my question is does the registry reserve names?

most likely this is a domain that has been registered before but then got deleted.
check the whois at registro.br. if it says something like this: "Domínio não disponível para registro, por ter participado de mais de 6 (seis) processos de liberação consecutivos." registro.br opens registration for these domains four times a year, if i'm not mistaken. |

Most probably this domain expired and you can try to register again in one of the four anual apportunieties we have to register these expired domains like Thomas said. |

Do you know when the next one of these periods for registration is? How do you go about registering in them if you are not a Brazilian resident/citizen?
