Looks like being an interesting market. 1,500,000 Internet users as of Sept/09, 35.3% penetration, per ITU (Mexico and Central America Internet Usage - Population Statistics) is a good quantity.

I could not find any .cr sales (no sales reported along this year at dnjournal).

About a registar, as usual for american cctlds, the best is going to the official registar, in this case nic.cr (NIC - Internet Costa Rica).

Requirements:

second level (.cr): Trade mark owning, national identity document.
third level (.co.cr): Trade mark owning, national identity document.

I found registrations through nic.cr relatively easy and I now own a few .CR domains. I registered them when the registry introduced second level domains.

However I hear that an ownership transfer in the case of a sale can be extremely painful. So painful that in the case that I heard about the buyer and seller decided to delete and re-register the domain instead. Hopefully this has changed in the mean time.

Delete and reregister! That sounds risky.
If I may ask what are you doing with the domains you registered?

It sounds very risky indeed - you need to get the timing right ;-)

I just checked and even though I thought we had more we actually only have two .CR domains at the moment. Both are slated for development with a local partner but are parked in the mean time.

Nothing worth mentioning on my second level domains - I would still consider this speculative at this point. With development you may be able to get some traffic. The domains are Spanish language domains.

Google for example still uses google.co.cr and appears not have registered google.cr yet.

Thinking I will grab a few and see if I can get them indexed. Seems to be quite a few very good domains available. Maybe I will get Google.cr (kidding)
