Default GoDaddy up for auction

News, which started as a rumour, now seems to be gaining tranction that GoDaddy.com is on the market. As of yet no denials from Bob Parsons seem to have been issued.

The news was first broken by the WSJ, reporting that GoDaddy is expected to bring $1 billion. No doubt more news, and especially rumours, will spread like a wildfire but for an interesting take on possible buyers, should the news of the sale be confirmed, can be found here.

The major question has to be how will a sale affect the registration of many ccTLD's to both the public at large and domainers in general? At the moment GoDaddy.com is able to supply a fairly large number of ccTLD's, although some of the rules of registration 'can prevent' some people from registering, i.e. the Canadian .ca as an example. Indeed it would seem that although many ccTLD's can obviously be registered with 'local' and other international companies many people prefer to do so through GoDaddy because of their familiarity with the company. Under new ownership this 'familiarity' of GD's clients may well dwindle.

Of course there is also the opportunity for a 'new' GoDaddy.com to further increase the number of different ccTLD's available for registration through them, perhaps even aim to be the first really international registrar of domains, now that would truly be something and could also lead to a much increased boost to the auction aftermarket side of the business.
