.is domains now serviced by the Autonomica Anycast System

ISNIC has signed a contract for anycasti services for the .is ccTLD with Autonomica AB of Stockholm Sweden. Autonomica is the current operator of the I-root, and as such operates servers in 33 locations all over the world.

The IS has been served by the ISC SNS@ISC system for some time now and together these two systems mean that the response time for delegation record lookup for .IS domains will be much improved globally. ISNIC will also have better defenses against various types of resource depletion on the .is nameserver set.

Hmm.. ccTLD for Iceland is a very tiny one with only 25,000 domain names registered. They have now quite sophisticated system as for such a small registry

isnic is a funny registry. only one i know that is doing nameserver checks periodically after a registration.
no wonder they don't have many domains.

with them being struck hard by the current finance crisis i guess they need to find some new income.

Very easy system to use to register domains, some great generic and HDN domains must still be available.

I have a few domains.

You can registrer 1 characters domains and IDN.

They allowed the registration of foreigners.

But Iceland is only 300k people.. not a big market.. and yes, maybe for some few HDNs but I don't like them and don't believe in them at all. So not a market for myself.

.is domains are very popular in Iceland.

A Icelandic told me that have been some private sales for finals user.

Yee.. but what kind of money you can get even for top keywords if there are 300k people out there? Probably not much.. and please take into account recent financial crisis in Iceland as well..

I have to say that this is a case of 'Watch this space', I am presently working on a worldwide site using an HDN which is a .is. If in the next 6 months it is not in the top 1000 popular sites in the world I will send all the above posters in this thread a bottle of champagne each!

Seriously, .is will become very popular.

It's a captive public. The financial crisis is a problem for everybody.

The government sold the registrar and it's now a private company.

The new owners had discounts in the prices.

What a news - I didn't know. But such things are only possible in case of really small countries and registries. I can't imagine DENIC, SIDN, AFNIC or NASK sold to private company
