Spanish domains worry me because there are so many countries that speak Spanish and have their own extensions.
Is it possible that in this one particular language you are better off with a .com more so than in languages like French, German, Japanese, etc?

From a global point of view, definitely the .com is strongest. There is evidently a mentality tie between spanish speaking countries, so there is also a lot trade between the different latin american countries as well as between latin america and Spain.
I am pretty sure though, that .es will be developing a strong identity within Spain and probably also acquire popularity in other spanish speaking countries. Many south american countries look up at Spain, so whatever goes on in .es will be interesting. |

But car, for instance, is spelled differently on each one: Coches, carros, automóvil...

Vino.com is better!
Vino is also an italian word (mean wine) and match perfectly with .com |

Between this options, I prefer Vino.com.
French is a official language in France (fr), Cameroon (cm), Belgium (be), Canada (ca), in some African countries and more. German is a official language in German (de), Austria (at) and Switzerland (ch) For example in Netherlands or Sweden, the national cctld is the first option. |

It is clear .com, as usual, but if your target is spanish wine, vino.es is a perfect choice

Vino.com is better, no doubt.
![]() I would never develop a .es domain without having the .com one, as I never do the same with a .net without the .com. Unlike other countries, Spanish TLD was restricted for too much time just for companies having a registered mark, so Spanish domains were just few ones and now all people here use to look for the .com, prior the .es. |

Vino.com > Vino.es, but Vino.es is the best option if your market is only Spain.

lol - but I must agree I prefer Red wine as well.
from a traffic point of view, I assume vino.com gets more traffic than vino.es. Best would be to have both ;-)

[QUOTE=Rick Latona;115]Spanish domains worry me because there are so many countries that speak Spanish and have their own extensions.
In looking for end users for my Spanish domains, I have seen companies in Mexico, Spain, Argentina, and other countries with .COM or .NET domains. Thus the global extensions are certainly recognized. .ES is a good choice and recognized outside Spain. But my opinion is that .CC extensions limit your market to those countries. While I am a believer in the Spanish market, I would need to better understand the opportunity and requirements before dipping my toe into country code domains. |

Rick, right now dot com is better choice in terms of traffic. But, in a long term investment, the results of com.es will be outstanding, doubtless.

I assume it's gonna be the same as in many other local markets:
If you're serious about doing business in SPAIN you will need the corresponding .es, even if your business runs on the .com. Lastminute.com said (about their decision to buy competitor lastminute.de for 10+ million) something like: we needed lastminute.de, because without that 50% of our advertising was used for advertising our competitor... And this is exactly my experience from branding a .com for the german market: the .de had LOTS of typos and paid for itself within weeks after I bought it from a clueless domainer... |

As with any domain it depends on the market.
Remember spanish in the spanish language is actually ESpanol, so it could easily represent the spanish speaking world. Also keep in mind there are more spanish speakers in the world than English speakers! Funnily enough I have also noticed the .US is attracting many spanish domain registrations.... |
