Debatable, but yes.
It could do a lot more, awareness outside Domaining circles is minimal. LOL, if I tell someone that my domain name is XYZ.in, they'll probably type www.XYZ.in.com lol. A little more awareness should do the trick. Regards, Aditya DomainTRD |

Hard to say.
The big boys have chosen .co.in as their commercial Indian domains. For example: Google. English keywords are very popular. The urban culture followers in India are more exposed to the Internet than the non-urban crowds. My point being, it is difficult to say if an age group of 18-40 uses the internet more or for that matter, hard to say for sure that people above 40 don't use the internet that much. It is about the atmosphere your are in, and that decides your level of exposure to media and the internet. This exposure cuts across Age groups. This urban crowd in point primarily uses English to communicate everywhere, their education is in English, they use only English for official communication in their offices, cell phone default languages, etc. So in a way, yes English Keywords and Americanization of English is common and popular. Hope this input helps. Regards, Aditya DomainTRD |

Most of the bigger Indian companies stick to .in but surprisingly the MNC's stick to .co.in like google or kayak or hotels.com etc. Its mixed but in general .in will have a slightly higher edge then the .co.in's. As far as english terms are concerned, since almost the entire urban working class speaks or understands English and most of the work places have English as the working language, common english terms are quite popular. But at the same time as the general population is getting more and more tech savvy the common Indian Terms will find a better appeal with the first time net user rather than the english terms. For the long term it would have help to have a judicious mix of English and Hindi terms if one wants to have a profitable portfolio |

I have random LLL.in that get traffic for what appears to be no reason? Not much clicks and revenue though.

I have some 300 + .co.in /.in names and there is no way that .in gets anywhere near as much traffic as .co.in in my portfolio and I have some premiums in both.
My best .co.in gets in excess of 550 per day. And .co.in count for more than 95% of my total "India" traffic. |

Don't forget that a very large percentage of internet/computer use is in internet cafes. Since people don't store favorites etc on public computers, type in is a must.

No doubt about it, more people are buying their own boxes. But don't forget numbers. The number of Indians with their own boxes imay be a large absolute number but it's a small percentage. At the moment.

Look at google trends, .in is overtaking .co.in and also 93% of all indexed google names in .in vs. .co.uk means that 7% are .co.in. I think the .in will transcend the country code such that names like billie.in will sell just because it is a name. JUST mho
