Default adult domains

The thread about losing names mentioned in passing that adult/pornographic domains are illegal. I'm not in india. The websites are not currently hosted in India. I registered my .in's through go daddy (only a handful of "risque" names really) and none of them are even developed yet, but I'd like some pointers to what is acceptable and what isn't given my situation. What consequences are there for someone who does develop an adult site on a .in domain name? Thanks!

If you aren't in India and don't plan on going there I suppose your only risk is losing the name. That's a big risk though.

Thanks for the reply. Yeah, I was doing some research on my own after I asked the question to see what their policies were and if I was looking at the right place...

Policies

It states the following: The registry has the authority to deny or suspend a registration if it conflicts with the sovereign national interest or public order.

So building a website on cumming.in (one of my domains) targeting a world audience containing pornographic material would disrupt the public order in india? What if I put in place an ip filter or something that denied access to the site from india?

I don't think they the IP filter will be sufficient, as the adult content would still be visible to the rest of the world on an .in domain...

It certainly doesnt disrupt public order and things should be fine till the name doesnt come to the notice of the .IN registry or till someone doesnt complain against the website to the .IN Registry.

Once that happens, the name simply gets taken away. Just the way online gambling is illegal in the US, the same way Online Pornography is illegal in India

Thanks all. One more question

What's considered pornography in India? In the US, while it can vary by state to some degree, the laws generally refer to "sexually explicit" content including in most cases depictions of masturbation and even "faked" sex acts. But if you just have a topless photo or even just a non-sexual full frontal shot for example, that does not indicate any kind of naughty self touching then it's not considered "obscene" (note: I am not a lawyer )

How different is the definition in India? I'm assuming they draw the line pretty clearly if it's illegal and I'm sure someone's pushing all the way up to that line

Thanks!

I guess sometimes a fwe names silp thru. There was a high traffic porn .cn website, but they just shut it down. As long as you don't live there I guess no problem, otherwise you might be in big trouble.

All forms of Nudity including topless photography and sexually explicit material are banned in India.
You would be fine till someone complaints about the name to the .in registry or the authorities.

India is extremely schizophrenic about sex. There was a big kerfuffle a couple of years ago when Richard Gere kissed Shilpa Shetty during a charity telethon. There were many protests. There were many threats of arrest. Mind you, this was for a silly kiss on television!

A lot of ink was spilled over the story. In the end, the final result was that a lot of lawyers were paid a lot of money to make this story go away.

There may be a lot of 'enlightened' modern people in big cities who don't mind morals closer to modern US or British morals. But the vast majority prefers more modesty, despite Kama Sutra and all that.

So don't expect to get away with XXX sites if the authorities find out.

The name gets taken away, that would be the only conclusion in case the authorities find out.
