NIC Mexico (Network Information Center Mexico), the organization responsible of managing the .MX domain names, announces that the Pre-Registration period of the Reopening Process of domain name registration directly under .MX will come to end on July 31st. With this, current domain name holders of domain names under the different .MX classifications (.COM.MX, .ORG.MX, .EDU.MX, .NET.MX, .GOB.MX) will no longer have any privileges to register their correspondent domain name directly under .MX through any of the 180 accredited registrars.
It is important to mention that during the Pre-Registration Period current domain name holders had the opportunity to get their domain names at a preferential price. Starting on September 1st, a special pricing scheme will be in place. During this scheme, the initial registration fee for domain names directly under .MX will start at USD $1,000.00 and will be decreasing gradually over the time to be as low as USD$ 35.00 on October 31st. After this date, the regular registration fee will be set at USD$ 50.00. NIC Mexico also confirms that the registration fee for the other classifications (.COM.MX, .ORG.MX, .EDU.MX, .NET.MX, .GOB.MX) will not be increased. NIC Mexico recommends to all interested parties to secure their correspondent domain names directly under .MX before July 31st, taking advantage of the preferential fee and eliminating the possibility that someone else registers and uses the domain name. Excuse me while I pick myself up from the floor. I'm shocked. Absolutely shocked.

I like the approach. It is a Dutch auction scheme and I think it is an unconventional, creative, but risky way to test the market.

The purpouse of this scheme is to keep a low demand during the initial days of the Landrush.
We dind't want to build a whole new system to be used just the first week of landrush, but we needed to keep our systems up and running regardless of the ammount of requests. Bare in mind that all the price announcements apply only to NIC Mexico Registrar, and that we have 180 more registrars where you can register the .MX domain names (sometimes cheaper than us) Registry .MX: Consulta de Registrars de Nombres de Dominio .MX Finally, the one thousand USD price will last a week the most, as soon as we are sure we could go down the next step (in price) we will lower it. |
