I dont own a single .co.uk domain but this segment of the domain market really interest me. I went to own a search for generic words or phrases and I couldn't really find any. Would you guys say that all the good co.uk domains registered already and it is only potential of finding the domain on the aftermarket?

There's stuff still available if you're willing to consider specific 2-3 word products and services, rather than larger categories of products.
For example, I registered AquamarineRing.co.uk and AquamarineRings.co.uk yesterday - they each get several thousand exact matches on the Google keyword tool. Similarly, I registered PolarisingFilter.co.uk and PolarisingFilters.co.uk a couple of days ago. And today I registered CandyflossMaker.co.uk, WarmingDrawer.co.uk and several others in the "kitchen appliances" niche. Your best bet is to spend time looking through ecommerce sites and seeing the types of products on offer for a given niche. For example, if you're looking for gardening products, look through gardening shopping sites and note down the names of major products (hint: quite often, they're in the navigation of the site at some level - look for the Site Map to get a quick overview) and then compare with the Google Keyword tool and whatever other tools you use to analyse domains. Run the likely candidates through a bulk Whois checker and you may find some "availables". Generally I can turn up anywhere between 2-10 domains an hour if I really focus on drilling down into a niche like I outlined above. I would probably search 200-500 domains to find those. Of course, you have to also weigh up the potential value of your time - are you better off going after names in the aftermarket? Everyone's answer may be different...

I guess so, but since I don't park most of my domains (they're pointed directly at my sales site) I'm not that concerned about it. They're available if a company wants one of them, and they're on the shelf if I ever want to build a mini (or larger) site on them.
The point is, if you're willing to take advantage of existing sources of keywords (like the ecommerce site technique I outlined above) it's 20x more efficient than randomly trying to think of products or services and THEN checking to see if they're available...

Yeah unfortunately with the top CCTLD's like .DE and .CO.UK, many of the best domains are already taken.

Here are a few searches that can help you. In each case, you should enter the whole search on one line in Google (including the quotes "" where indicated) and replace the KEYWORD by the word or words you want to check... Oh, and use the "correct" Google for the cctld you're targeting. For example, Google.co.uk for .co.uk.
"see all products" KEYWORD "full product list" KEYWORD "product catalogue" KEYWORD ("product catalog" KEYWORD if you want to use the US spelling) "see all categories" KEYWORD --- So for example if you want to get some ideas about gardening products, you could try Googling "see all products" gardening or "product catalogue" gardening

Oh, and since there aren't really any comprehensive drop lists in .co.uk, save your full keyword list (of decent keywords, which you've checked against Google Keyword stats etc.), not just the available ones. That way, you can start to build your own private list of "potential generics" and keep track of any that are due to expire soon.
My lists are much smaller than many I'm sure, but I still have several hundred thousand keyphrases on them as I've been adding to them for years, so I know when anything off of my lists is going to drop...
